I visited a friend at the Carlton today. I met 4 people who work there, all were courteous, kind, professional. There weren't any bad smells. My friend said response time is slow when she requests help, I suspect they're understaffed.

I see that many folks have given this nursing home no or little stars and have awful things to say about it. I would like you to know that my mother was 94 and spent a few months there before she passed away. I thought the staff was amazing! Even as you enter the door, there is no bad smell, there is a very friendly person there to greet you and they even have a dog named Carlton who will make you feel right at home. Placing a loved one in a nursing home is never easy but after caring for my mother for almost a year and a half in my own home and could not tend to her needs as a nurse would our amazing Doctor, Dr. Eric Mizuno suggested The Carlton at The Lake. I am not sorry she went there and my mother even said she liked it. The staff was very attentive to her needs. However, night shift folks are terribly understaffed, so that is an issue that the company who owns the Carlton should change. At any rate, we did speak to some EMTs that brought my mother in and they told me that The Carlton is probably one of the best nursing homes in the city of Chicago and they had seen them all. Remember nothing is perfect and we did visit my mother on a regular basis each week to make sure that she was getting the proper care she needed. I think that The Carlton is a good place. One big fault besides the night staff being understaffed is that the food is HORRIBLE and I am not kidding. They really need to look into this and make it better. Okay, that is all from me and I hope that this helps you when you need to make this sort of decision.

Terrible care. It's not the staff's fault, as far as I can tell. They do seem caring and skilled. The problem lies solely with the Administration's idea of adequate staffing levels. When your nurses can't answer their call bells for more than 45 minutes because they are so busy with other tasks, that is a management and administration problem, not a nursing problem. But it still boils down to: I cannot recommend this place.
